Bhatkal: After experiencing intense heat over the past four to five days, parts of coastal Karnataka, including Bhatkal, witnessed light rainfall on Saturday night, bringing temporary relief to residents. However, the respite proved short-lived as temperatures rose again soon after, with the mercury crossing 34°C once more by Sunday afternoon.
According to the Meteorological Department, coastal Karnataka is expected to witness mixed weather conditions over the next four days, with prevailing heat and high humidity accompanied by the possibility of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in isolated areas.
A yellow alert has been issued for neighbouring districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada from April 26 to 29, warning of continued hot and humid conditions along with the likelihood of lightning, gusty winds, and scattered rainfall.
Despite the chances of rain, weather officials cautioned that daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, with heatwave-like conditions likely in some areas. Fishermen and residents in coastal regions have been advised to remain alert during periods of thunderstorm activity and lightning.
It may be recalled that moderate rainfall was also recorded in some areas on the night of April 24, while cloudy conditions prevailed through Friday and Saturday, with intermittent sunshine and overcast skies.
Similar to Bhatkal, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts witnessed high humidity levels on Saturday, with fluctuating weather conditions throughout the day. In Mangaluru city, the maximum temperature was recorded at 34.7°C, while the minimum stood at 25.3°C.
The prevailing heat and rising humidity have disrupted daily life, particularly affecting street vendors, hawkers, construction workers, and those working outdoors, who continue to bear the brunt of the harsh weather.
Health experts have reported an increase in cases of dehydration, dizziness, and heat-related discomfort, especially among children and the elderly. Many residents have also complained of disturbed sleep due to uncomfortable nighttime temperatures.
Meanwhile, the surge in heat has led to increased electricity consumption, driven by the continuous use of air conditioners and fans. Reports of water scarcity have also emerged from certain areas, while prolonged exposure to heat is beginning to impact agricultural activities and crops.
Meteorologists indicate that while intermittent pre-monsoon showers may offer occasional relief in the coming days, the prevailing hot and humid conditions are likely to persist until the onset of the southwest monsoon.
