Kumta: Around 177 people were administered the Monkey Fever (Kyasanur Forest Disease) vaccination at Yana in Alkod gram panchayat limits in Kumta taluk recently.

Two teams comprising health department staff and Asha workers administered the vaccination at two anganwadi centres in Yana.

Giving more details about the vaccination programme, Taluk Health Officer Agya Nayak said that as many as five people in Yana region including a foreign tourist were affected with monkey fever. Of them, one woman and the foreign woman (tourist) sought treatment at Manipal Hospital. The remaining three people were treated at Katgal primary health centre itself.

Agya said that there was a target to vaccinate 227 people in Yana but only 88% of vaccination has been possible. The vaccination programme was held under the supervision of Katgal Primary Health Centre Medical Officer Chaitraprabha Naik.

Agya also informed that pamphlets giving information about monkey fever were being distributed at Yana Cross on Kumta-Sirsi Road to alert people. Also, a counter has been set up to freely distribute the DMP oil, tick repellant, which prevents the disease. This oil is also poisonous and so, people were being given information on the right method to use it.
