Karwar: Heavy rain predicted again in coastal Karnataka; Red alert declared for three days

Karwar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka — including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts — from June 12 to June 14, 2025. The forecast warns of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of all three districts during this period.

Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada, K. Lakshmi Priya, has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid venturing into vulnerable or hazardous areas.

In view of the potential risks posed by high-velocity winds and intense rainfall, the District Disaster Management Authority has released a comprehensive set of safety guidelines for residents and officials.

A District Emergency Operations Centre has been activated at the DC’s office. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official social media handles and credible news sources. The public is also advised not to believe or spread rumours or unverified information.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea during the alert period. Children and the general public are urged to stay away from low-lying areas, ponds, riverbanks, and seashores. Tourists and residents are advised to avoid entering rivers, beaches, or any water bodies.

Farmers are advised to suspend agricultural activities during adverse weather conditions such as thunderstorms or heavy rain. During rainfall, citizens—especially children and outdoor workers—should avoid staying outside and are advised to seek shelter in safe and stable buildings.

Individuals are strongly warned not to take shelter near trees, electric poles, or under weak or dilapidated structures. Fallen power lines must be strictly avoided. Those living in vulnerable buildings, including dilapidated houses, unstable compound walls, or landslide-prone areas, are advised to relocate to designated relief centres identified by the district administration.

People in rural areas are urged to exercise caution while crossing culverts, low-lying bridges, and other water-logged routes.

For emergency assistance or to report incidents such as wall collapses or hazardous structures, residents may contact the 24x7 District Control Room at 08382-229857 or send messages to the WhatsApp helpline at 94835 11015.

Further information and support are available through the Taluk Tahsildar offices or respective Disaster Management Control Rooms across the district.
