Karwar: The city of Karwar after being a district headquarter, does not have a district stadium to hold sports events. But now, the Karwar city municipal council and the local MLA is planning of developing a sports ground in KHB Colony in the city. The city, which is surrounded by sea, river and hills, does not have any spacious land for construction of a well-equipped stadium, but the CMC has identified three acres of land in New KHB Colony.
Recently, the CMC commissioner has prepared a detailed project report of the proposed ground. In the DPR, the CMC proposed a 200-metre running track, volleyball court, basketball court, open gym, open stage to hoist functions, shelter for sportspersons, drinking water facility, toilets, seating arrangements and compound wall around the ground among others. CMC commissioner Yogeshwar said that there is no large track of land available in the city for the construction of the district stadium.
“Therefore, we have planned to construct a medium sized stadium at KBH Colony where about 3 acres of land is available. About 20 Gunta of land in that area have been encroached and we will clear this,” he said.
“For the stadium, we have prepared an estimation of Rs 3 crore with all amenities. Recently, we have spoken to Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul to move the file to the Sports Department. We hope the government approves our project.
”The Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, which looks after the construction of sports grounds, has been doing so in several districts for the welfare of youth. Uttara Kannada, which is one of the largest districts in the state, is hoping that the department will release funds for the proposed stadium.
Karwar MLA Satish Sail said, “Recently, I wrote a letter to District Minister R V Deshpande to release Rs 3 crore for the proposed district stadium. Meanwhile, we have also contacted Youth Empowerment and Sport Minister Pramod Madhwaraj and submitted a letter about the stadium. We hope that within a couple of weeks, the government will release funds for the stadium.”
