Karwar: After the two month fishing ban was lifted, the motorised fishing resumed in the district since 1st August, Tuesday.

However, the fishermen were disappointed as the catch of fishes on the first day was not as expected.

Hundreds of boats had set sail from the Baitakhol port on Tuesday morning, but as the trawler boats were successful in netting fishes, the persian boats had to return empty handed without much success.

A fisherman Vinayak Harikanthra said that usually during the beginning of fishing year, varieties of fishes are caught including Bangude and Paaplets. He said that the fishermen are worried about the scarcity of fishes as the fishermen have returned empty handed on the first day itself.

Another fisherman stated, “At some places the fish is being sold at Rs.100 per kg, but the amount is not sufficient to pay the boat’s diesel expenses and salary of the fishermen. If the scarcity continues then it will be tough for the fishermen to do their work.”
