Karwar: The Karnataka government’s flagship Shakti Scheme, aimed at empowering women across the state, has seen remarkable success in Uttara Kannada district, where a total of 11.81 crore women, girl students, and members of the transgender community have availed free travel facilities in government buses till date.
The scheme, which allows eligible beneficiaries to travel without fare in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, including city, ordinary, and express services, has not only enhanced mobility for women but has also provided substantial financial relief. Since the scheme’s implementation, tickets worth ₹343.86 crore have been distributed in Uttara Kannada district under the initiative, which continues to support the operational revenue of the transport corporations through government reimbursement.
Uttara Kannada district is divided into two major divisions: the Uttara Kannada division and the Haliyal-Dandeli division. Of the total usage under the scheme, the Uttara Kannada division alone accounted for 9.40 crore journeys, with tickets worth ₹269.15 crore issued. Meanwhile, in the Haliyal-Dandeli division, 2.40 crore women availed the benefit, with tickets worth ₹74.70 crore distributed.
Officials noted that the scheme has proved highly beneficial in supporting women’s employment by enabling them to commute to distant cities for work opportunities. It has also helped students, especially girl students, pursue higher education without the financial burden of daily transportation costs. The money saved on bus fares is being used for essential needs such as paying college fees and purchasing textbooks.
Moreover, women employed in private sectors and those studying in other districts have been able to visit their families more frequently, contributing to emotional well-being and family stability. The scheme has become a lifeline for many, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where public transport is crucial for daily commuting.
The Shakti Scheme, through its extensive reach and impact, has emerged as a transformative step in improving the quality of life for women and marginalized communities in Uttara Kannada and across Karnataka.
