Heavy rainfall pushes up water levels in dams

Moderate to heavy rains continued to lash several parts of the state on Tuesday.


Incessant rains lashed Kodagu district pushing the water level at the Sangama in Bhagamandala by four feet. Napoklu-Ingeri Road was under water affecting the movement of vehicles for a few hours. Sampaje and Bhagamandala have received highest of 80 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The water-level in Harangi reservoir has increased to 2,818.79 feet. The inflow of water to the reservoir was 3,742 cusecs. Rains continued to lash Mudigere, Kottigehara, Kuduremukh, Sringeri and other parts in Chikkamagaluru district.

Heavy rains lashed parts of Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district. As a result, the Kumaradhara river was flowing to the brim. The sky remained overcast throughout the day in Mangaluru. In the last 24 hours, DK district has received an average of 78.3 mm rainfall. 

On the other hand, Udupi district has received an average of 100 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Owing to gusty wind, over 4,000 arecanut trees have been damaged at Nooralbettu in Udupi. Kundapur taluk received highest of 115.1 mm rainfall. Uttara Kannada district continued to receive heavy rains throughout the day. Rainwater gushed into the cellar of St Joseph’s convent in Karwar causing inconvenience to students. Around 2,000 cusecs of water was released from two crest gates of Tunga dam at Gajanur near Shivamogga, on Tuesday, as incessant rains continued to lash Thirthahalli taluk. In the last 24 hours, Hulikal in Hosanagar taluk recorded highest rainfall of 146mm. Water level in Linganamakki dam in Sagar taluk rose to 1755.90 feet against the maximum level of 1819 feet. 

Several parts of Davangere district received intermittent rains while there was brisk rain for a brief period in Chitradurga district. It rained intermittently in Hosapete and surrounding areas in Ballari district. However, rainwater had gushed into several historic monuments in Hampi following heavy rains on Monday evening. Tourists were compelled to walk in the water accumulated in Hampi ruins. Moderate rains lashed Sandur town towards evening.

Hubballi-Dharwad received incessant rains throughout the day. Moderate rains lashed Belagavi city. The skies remained overcast for the entire day. With monsoon picking up in Mysuru region, parts of Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts received moderate to heavy rains. While it was drizzling in Mysuru city throughout the day, parts of Hunsur, K R Nagar and H D Kote taluks received good rains. 

Landslide holds up traffic on NH-66
Movement of vehicles on National Highway-66 was affected for more than an hour following landslide near Araga in Uttara Kannada district. Four-laning of the Highway is in pro­g­r­e­ss on the stretch. The soil of a loosened hillock fell on the road affecting traffic. An earthmover was pres­sed into service to clear the road. Vehicles were stranded for more than three km on either side.
