Ankola: Gangavali river is overflowing following heavy rain which has been lashing the area for the last three days.
The river water also marooned the villages including Bilihoilu, Hichkada Kurve, Dandebag, Motankurve, Sagadgeri, Gangavali, Manjaguni, Agragona Shedikatta and others on the river bank.
The taluk administration, which was all prepared to face the situation, shifted the affected people to safer zones. Steps have also been taken to open gruel centres to rescue people in case of a flood.
Footbridge washed away
Due to swelling water of the Gangavali, the footbridge at Vaidya Heggar area has been washed away cutting the moment of people on the Vaidya Heggar-Halavalli road. At Kuntkani, water had marooned agriculture lands and human habitats. Paddy seeds which were sown have also been washed away.
Tahsildar Vivek Shenvi visited the affected areas and said that a 24X7 helpline centre has been set up for the rescue of the people.
Several trees and over 50 electric poles also uprooted at several places in the taluk. Loss of around Rs 10 lakh is expected, said Hescom sources.
