Karwar: This year, the flood caused more than Rs 700 crore loss to Uttara Kannada district. Hence, efforts are being made to get adequate funds from the Centre for initiating relief measures, said Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar.
He was speaking to media persons here on Saturday, after collecting details on the flood and Covid situation from the officials concerned.
He said, heavy rains and floods caused a huge loss at Kalache, Anashi, Bhashi and other villages in the district. A team of officials of the Union Government would visit the district for assessing the loss that occurred due to the flood. Besides, an experts’ team would also be invited to the district for ascertaining reasons for the flood. Relief measures would be initiated in the flood-affected areas based on the experts’ report, he stated.
He said, the flood occurs every year in some areas in the district and landslides too occur in some places. If people residing in such areas, are ready to go safer places permanently, the government is ready to provide land to them. The land has also been identified for the same for this purpose, he said.
He said, various minor irrigation projects worth Rs 110 crore in the district and various public properties worth Rs 10 crore in the City have been damaged due to flood and rains. The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to give a report on it on August 8, he stated.
Meeting cancelled
Following a road accident in which an Assistant Executive Engineer was killed near Baleguli in Ankola taluk, Shivaram Hebbar cancelled the officials meeting scheduled in Karwar on Saturday.
After collecting details from the officials, Hebbar visited flood-hit areas in Anashi, Kadra, and Mallapur for inspection.
