Sirsi: Farmers who had lost paddy crop due to monsoon failure, and were expecting crop compensation are heavily disappointed.

Because, a majority of farmers have lost their crop compensation. Now they are complaining that because of unscientific crop loss calculation thousand of farmers in taluk are meted with justice.

A total of 14,817 farmers had opted for crop insurance and paid Rs 69.40 lakh insurance premium last year. Of them only 5,186 farmers have been selected for the crop insurance. Rs 9.38 crore has been released to the taluk as crop compensation. But 9,631 farmers are deprived of the benefit.

Farmer Anand Gowda of Santolli said, the monsoon was failed last year. Except Sampakhand Hobli, farmers in other Hobli- Sirsi, Hulekal, and Banavasi didn’t sow due to want of water.

Through some farmers sown their field plants didn’t grow. As a result of this, thousands of farmers suffered. But unfortunately only some farmers got compensation because of unscientific random survey of crop loss conducted by officials.

An officer on condition of anonymity said, the random survey method was proving fatal for the farmers. ”The staff who survey the loss get the land survey number from the District Statistical officer for conducting crop survey. Based on this number, the staff take photograph and video of crop and send them to the department’s server. Based on this data, the crop loss is calculated. If the survey staff accidentally get the land survey number where there is good crop, the whole panchayat will be deprived of the compensation.”

The Kharif paddy is grown in 5,250 hectare of land in 10 panchayat limits in Banavasi Hobli. Last year, farmers in all the panchayat limits had got the compensation. But this year farmers of Gudnapur, Bhashi, Banavasi, Bisalkoppa, Unchalli panchayats are deprived of the compensation.

Honnappa Gowda, a farmer who is deprived of compensation said, farmers lost their crop last year. In such a situation it was difficult to calculate the loss. The outdated method of survey and calculation of loss were making farmers to suffer.
