Honnavar: An educational tour turned into a tragedy after a 14-year old student was killed on the spot and 12 others were injured after a bus in which they were travelling slipped into a trench at Sulemarki of Malemane Ghat near Gerusoppa in the taluk on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as T Basha, a student of Kadiri Government High School at Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. 

The bus was ferrying a total of 45 students, who were on educational tour in Karnataka.

Along with the students, there were nine teachers, four assistants and cooks.

The incident took place when they were on the way to Murdeshwar after visiting Sigandur and Jog falls. 

According to the sources, speed driving is the reason for the mishap. The injured eight students, three teachers, and a cook have been admitted at Manipal Hospital. The remaining students and teachers are undergoing treatment at the taluk hospital in Honnavar.

ASP Nikhil, Tahsildar Vivek Shenvi, PSI Savitri Nayak, and staff visited the hospital.

Taluk Hospital Medical Officer Rajesh Kini and other staff are treating the students.

A case has been registered in this regard at Honnavar Police Station.
