MANGALURU/UDUPI: Notwithstanding the fact that it still tops Karnataka’s Covid-19 list with most number of positive cases, Udupi had twin reasons to celebrate on Tuesday.
Firstly, it registered nil positive cases for the first time in June and secondly because 103 patients were discharged after treatment and sent for mandatory home quarantine. Dakshina Kannada district, on the other hand, reported 23 positive cases with 16 patients discharged.
A visibly happy G Jagadeesha, deputy commissioner, Udupi district, in his daily video message update on status of cases, said the district has recorded zero positive cases during the day.

“On a still happier note, we have discharged 103 patients who were found negative and sent them to home quarantine,” he said, adding treatment for other active cases is on. Udupi as per district bulletin presently has 641 active cases and has discharged 304 patients thus far.

Active cases in Dakshina Kannada district, on the other hand, climbed to 96 with 23 out of 208 samples tested coming out positive. Most of these cases – 17 in all, were found in a group of youths in their mid-20s and early 30s who had returned home in a chartered flight from Saudi Arabia on June 2. Their swab samples taken at institutional quarantine arranged for them by the company that sent them home – came out positive, DC Sindhu B Rupesh, said.

Other five cases included a person who had come from Mumbai on May 20, completed his quarantine in Udupi and came to Moodbidri, three people who had returned from Dubai on June 1 and were in institutional quarantine at a hotel here. The last case was that of another person who too had returned from Mumbai on May 13, spent time in quarantine in Udupi and had returned to Bantwal, where he tested positive. DK has recorded 7 deaths so far.
