Graduates who got degree before Nov 1, 2016 are eligible

Karwar:  Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar said that new electoral rolls were being prepared for elections from graduates and teachers constituencies as per the Supreme Court orders. The process of enrolling names in the electoral rolls had already begun and December 23 will be the last date for that.

Informing this at a press conference in Karwar, Harishkumar said that graduates who have cleared their degree before November 1, 2016, and have been staying in one location for at least last six months are eligible to enroll their names. The draft voters’ rolls for Karnataka West Graduates Constituency-2019 had been published on December 7, and there were 9,000 voters in the electoral rolls of Uttara Kannada district.

“West Graduates Constituency is spread across the districts of Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttara Kannada and in the previous elections, there were around 16,000 voters in the electoral rolls. To increase the number of enrollments this year, various government departments have been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring enrollments,” Harishkumar informed.

Even political parties must come forward to improve enrollment. Already, information about this is being provided to the people through the recorded messages played on an amplifier installed in door-to-door waste collection vehicles, Harishkumar added.

Final electoral rolls of the constituency will be published on January 16, 2020. Claims and objections could be taken up to December 23. Supplement rolls will be prepared on January 10, he said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Nagaraj Singrer, Assistant Commissioner Priyang, City Municipal Commissioner S Yogeshwar and others were present.

Karavali Utsav doubtful

Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar said that the government should decide on whether Karavali Utsav must be celebrated this year or no as Uttara Kannada district suffered floods and subsequent losses this year. Even Minister C T Ravi expressed the same view during his visit to Uttara Kannada district recently.

"We can clearly tell about organising such Utsavs only after the government decides to spend enough for holding such grand programmes," Harishkumar said at a press conference.

"There are also plans to celebrate Kadambotsava this year. But as Marikamba fair will also be celebrated in Sirsi this year, the schedule for Kadambotsava will be fixed accordingly. Hornbill, Kayaking, Scuba Diving fests will also be held," he explained.
