Kumta: Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar, who visited Medini, a remote village in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district on Friday, assured that good quality approach roads will be laid to connect the village to the nearest town and that supply of ration and other essentials required by the villagers will be ensured during the rainy season.
Several officers of the district administration visited Medini village and lent ears to the grievances of one of the most backward villages of the taluk. The deputy commissioner directed the forest and panchayat raj engineer department officials to prepare a plan and estimate for construction of eight kilometre road to the village. Responding to the issue, forest officials said that area around Medini is home to Lion-tailed macaque which is endemic to the Western Ghats and so, the permission of forest authorities was needed for construction of the road there.
Harishkumar then said that no tree should be chopped and the present kaccha road must be converted into a good quality road as soon as possible.
He said that he will soon submit a report in this regard to the chief minister.
Medini, which is 40 kilometres from taluk headquarters Kumta, comes under Soppin Hosalli gram panchayat. There is only one narrow eight kilometre kaccha road which connects the village to the mainland and so, the village lacks basic facility. Due to this problem, young boys of this village were not getting brides.
A report on the sufferings of the villagers of Medini had appeared in the media and responding to that, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had directed the deputy commissioner to personally visit the village and submit a report.
Zilla panchayat chief executive officer Mohammad Roshan, deputy conservator of forest Ganapathi, tahsildar Meghraj Naik, panchayat raj department engineer R G Gunagi and others accompanied the DC during the visit.
