MANGALURU/UDUPI: Dakshina Kannada(DK) and Udupi continued to reel under deluge of new Covid-19 cases as 552 new cases were reported in the two coastal districts on Sunday. While the 377 fresh cases in DK took the tally of total positive cases to 14600, Udupi in reporting 175 cases saw its tally of positive cases go up to 12511. The nine Covid-19 related deaths in DK saw the tally touch 400 on a day Udupi reported four fatalities to the virus.
Influenza like illness (ILI) contributed to 178 (47.2%) of the fresh cases reported in DK. Authorities are trying to trace the source of infection in 130 patients (34.4%), while primary contacts 50 (13.2%) and 19 severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases (5%) made up the tally. DK reported 216 symptomatic cases (57.2%) while 161 patients were asymptomatic. Mangaluru taluk (192) contributed to 50% of the total cases reported in DK.
Health authorities discharged 311 patients including 193 in home isolation leaving them with 2961 active cases. A total of 1.04-lakh samples have been tested in the district as on date and 90311 of them were negative. The authorities have also discharged 11239 patients post-treatment, deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra said. Comorbid conditions were present in all nine patients who died in the district including three in Mangaluru taluk.
Primary contacts and ILI cases at 65 and 61 respectively contributed to 72% of the total 175 fresh cases that Udupi reported. Source of infection in 49 patients (28%) made up the day's tally. Like in DK, symptomatic patients (134) accounted for 76.5% of total reported cases. Udupi taluk reported 106 cases, Kundapura 34, Karkala 31 and four were reported from outside Udupi. Active cases in Udupi now are 1906 and total Covid-19 related deaths stand at 112.
