Karwar: Members of City Municipal Council unanimously opposed the second phase of port construction work up to childern’s park on the coastal beach, as part of developing the ‘Sarvarutu’ commercial port.

The members took the decision at the general body meeting, held at City Municipal Council Hall, on Saturday. CMC members Prashant Harikanthra and K T Tandel claimed that fishing will be affected if the commercial port is extended up to park as fishermen’s boats cannot be ferried up to the end of beach.

Further, the number of visitors to the beach will be reduced and sea water will rise high and flood the area in Kodibag, they added. Members Santosh Naik Gurumath said, ”Tender process has been already taken up for the expansion of port. Seabird, Kaiga projects and now the port expansion have not benefited people of this region. The entire City is being used for expansion work, including road construction for port. The workers, who are engaged in the development work are from other states. As a result, the City will not be developed due to port expansion.”

The Debate concluded with the passing of the resolution opposing the projects in the presence of President Ganapathi Naik and Municipal Commissioner S Yogeshwar. Demanding closure of Karnataka One Citizen Service Centre at Ambedkar Colony, Vice President Leelavathi Thanekar informed that, on 25th August, 2016, she had passed a resolution to set up Karnataka One Citizen Service Centre at Dr Ambedkar Bhavan, at Ambedkar Colony in Nandangadda’s Ward Number 21.

Meanwhile, Santosh Naik welcomed the ban of pop and painted Ganesh idols during Ganeshotsava and requested for ban of crackers during celebrations. He advised municipal officials to celebrate the festival in a sober manner and eventually the public will follow it.
