Karwar: The deputy commissioner S.S Nakul told the Civic workers to collect wet and dry waste separately.

In keeping with Centre’s clean india campaign guidelines, Karwar Municipal Council has emphasised the garbage classification. If civic workers do not divide garbage while collecting, they will not be allowed to enter the Waste Disposal Unit, at Shirwad in Taluk", Municipal Commissioner S Yogeshwar said.

Hence, civic workers, who come to doors with waste collecting vehicles will refuse waste if it is not separated into dry and wet garbage. There are 31 wards in the Municipal Council and garbage collecting vehicles are collecting garbage in 15 different routes. Earlier, an effort was made to inform public about waste separation through speaker calls, but the result was not encouraging. Hence, council has come up with this new decision.

“Open places in City have become garbage yards as people are disposing waste in open places. Now, notice boards have been installed. As a primary step, Rs 100 fine will be imposed on those who dump garbage in open spaces. If they will have to cough up fines up to Rs 10,000“, he added.

The huge mass of garbage collected at Shirwad Solid Waste Disposal Unit is decreasing due to classification of garbage. Eight people have been appointed to classify waste. Wet garbage is used to manufacture fertilizers through scientific method.
