Bengaluru: A total of 63 urban local bodies in Karnataka (ULB) would go to polls on May 29, state election commission said Thursday.
The 63 ULBs include eight city municipal councils, 33 townmunicipal councils and 22 town panchayats.
The model code of conduct would come into force with immediate effect, State Election Commissioner P Sreenivasachari told reporters.
Pointing out that polls were held for 109 ULBs in thefirst phase in September last year, the commission said that in the second phase, there are totally 103 ULBs term of which endsbetween March and July, for which the elections are to beheld.
As ward-wise reservation and delimitation pertaining to 39 ULBs have been pending before the High Court, and also asKundgol town panchayat is going for bypolls on May 19, elections would be held for remaining 63 ULBs, it said.
While the poll notification would be issued on May 9, May 16 would be the last date for filing of nominations.
Scrutiny of nominations would take place on May 17 and May 20would be the last date for withdrawal.
Counting of votes would take place on May 31.
Representatives for 1,361 wards in 63 ULBs would be elected in this poll, for which the voting would take place in 1,646 polling stations, and 8,230 poll personnel would be onduty.
Out of total 14,74,086 voters, 7,36,899 are women, 7,37,006 are men and 181 others.
Electronic voting machines (EVM) would be used for the polls, officials said.
It is likely to be a three-cornered contest in some parts as Congress and JD(S) that fought the Lok Sabha polls together against the BJP, have already indicated about going separate in the local body polls.
Meanwhile, 10 Taluk Panchayat seats and 202 Gram Panchayat seats would also be going for bypolls on May 29, where ballot papers would be used.
