Hubballi: A raid on Assistant Commissioner’s residence by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Hubballi yielded close to 5000 silk and designer sarees worth lakhs of rupees.
According to the sources, the raids revealed assets worth four to five times the known sources of income of the officer. While crores of rupees in new currency have been tumbling out of cupboards and lockers of officials during raids by IT, it was a different case as the raid officers found sarees instead of cash at the Kariyappa Colonel’s residence in Vishweshwar Nagar.
Simultaneous raids were conducted one after another by three ACB teams on the residence and office of Kariyappa Colonel and they were surprised to find bundles of sarees at his residence in Vishweshwar Nagar. The team came across the bundles and boxes piled up at each and every room of Colonel’s house, during their search for documents.
The boxes and bundles were stacked with costly sarees just like the almirahs and cupboards. Though the exact number of sarees is yet to be counted, an anonymous source said that it is estimated to cross 5000 sarees.
Cash amount of Rs.6.94 lakhs from his residence and Rs.1.35 lakhs at his office both in new currency notes. The search went on till late evening and is likely to continue on Wednesday. Two bank lockers were also found by the team but were unable to check them due to bank strike on Tuesday.
The ACB also found documents pertaining to another bungalow and two residential plots in Hubbali, two shops and one house in Belagavi. They also found documents relating to 24 acres of land in Rayanal and Bhadrapur villages and a flat in Bengaluru.
The sources said that the officer’s assets were worth four to five times his known sources of income as per initial estimate.
