Bhatkal: The coastal districts of Karnataka—Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada—have been witnessing relentless rainfall over the past few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain from May 24 to May 27. Following the alert, the sea has turned highly turbulent, with strong waves observed along the coasts of Mangaluru, Udupi, Bhatkal, and Karwar.
On Saturday, Bhatkal experienced intermittent rain, while Kumta, Ankola, Karwar, Sirsi, and Siddapur recorded more intense showers. However, by Sunday, rainfall intensified in Bhatkal, Mangaluru, and Udupi, with overcast skies persisting across the coastal belt and further deterioration in weather expected.
Public entry banned at Murdeshwar beach
In response to the red alert and rising sea turbulence, Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya had earlier advised the public to stay away from the water. Despite the warning, some individuals were seen playing in the waves at Murdeshwar beach on Saturday. As a precautionary measure, the police imposed a complete ban on public entry at the beach on Sunday.
While rainfall slightly subsided in Kumta, Ankola, and Karwar, heavy showers continue in Mangaluru, Udupi, and parts of neighbouring Kerala. Bhatkal also continues to receive intermittent but intense rain.
