Bhatkal: Drainage work intensified on National Highway ahead of heavy rainfall forecast

Bhatka: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy rainfall across Coastal Karnataka from Wednesday, the National Highway Authority has stepped up drainage cleaning efforts in Bhatkal to prevent waterlogging along critical sections of the highway.

Over the past few days, drainage maintenance has been carried out at key points, including Ranginkatta, Noor Masjid, and near the petrol pump close to Shamsuddin Circle. However, despite these measures, even brief spells of rain have continued to cause water accumulation, particularly near Ranginkatta and Shamsuddin Circle.

On Tuesday, following persistent issues, authorities opened a manhole of a major culvert near the petrol pump at Shamsuddin Circle and discovered a severe blockage caused by cement debris, which was obstructing the water flow.

In response, traffic was partially diverted, and reconstruction of the drainage system was initiated. The debris was removed from the culvert, and new pipes are now being installed to ensure smoother drainage.

Speaking to SahilOnline, Bhatkal Municipal Chief Officer Venkatesh Nauda said, “It is still unknown who blocked the culvert or why. However, ensuring proper water flow and preventing flooding on the National Highway falls under the responsibility of the Highway Authority. The municipality is extending full cooperation to facilitate the ongoing work.”

Traffic movement in the area was disrupted due to the partial road closure, although local police were deployed to manage the situation. As of Tuesday evening, the repair work remained incomplete and is expected to continue on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a red alert for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts from June 12 to 14, warning of torrential rains, strong winds, and thunderstorms. An orange alert has also been announced for June 11. Local authorities are expediting precautionary measures and infrastructure work in preparation for the impending downpour.
