Udupi: Asha workers, under the aegis of Karnataka Rajya Samyukta Asha Karyakartheyara Sangha, staged a protest urging the government to fulfill their demands in front of DHO office on Saturday.

The protesters demanded a monthly honorarium of Rs 12,000 and safety gear to protect themselves in the fight against Covid-19. “The Centre only has lauded the work and efforts of Asha workers in its fight against Covid-19. Our demands are not fulfilled even after many months,” they alleged.

“We have been working round the clock. However, we are not paid on time. We visit houses to monitor those in quarantine and also to collect details without wearing any safety gear. With monthly wages pending, we are neck-deep in trouble. The government should fix a monthly honorarium of Rs 12,000 for Asha workers,” the protesters urged.

“As we are working amidst the Covid-infected, the government has a responsibility to take care of our welfare and health,” they said.

A memorandum was submitted to the district health officer on the occasion.
