Karwar: Eight people have died in various natural disasters in Uttara Kannada district between April and July this year.
The government has given Rs 1.71 crore as compensation to those who have lost their lives and properties in such incidents. In the last four months, various natural disasters, including Tandrakuli landslide, have struck the coastal district following heavy rain. Three children of a family were killed in landslide at Tandrakuli near Kumta town. Two people were killed in two separate incidents in Mundagod taluk and one each was killed in Bhatkal, Haliyal and Karwar taluks.
Not only human lives, many cattle and other animals died in various natural disasters. Many people had lost their houses. Most of the natural disasters took place in June. Though the rain had reduced in July, natural calamities did not stop. Under the Central Government National Disaster Respond Fund (NDRF), the district administration has given Rs 32 lakh to the kin of eight deceased people (Rs 4 lakh each) till the end of July.
The administration has also disbursed Rs 0.7 lakh to the injured, Rs 1.2 lakh for cattle loss, Rs 4.3 lakh for crop loss, Rs 29.37 lakh for house damage and Rs 104.23 lakh for other damages (total Rs 1.71 crore). In these four months, about 719 houses were damaged in various taluks. In Bhatkal alone, 47 houses were damaged, 34 in Siddapur, 29 in Kumta, 22 in Sirsi, 16 in Ankola, 14 in Yellapur, 10 in Karwar, eight in Joida and five houses in Mundagod taluks. In these property loss cases, a few claims were rejected due to technical problems, said a Revenue Department official.
