Karwar: The rescue team on Monday fished out three more bodies of Goan tourists, who had washed away in Nagarmadi waterfalls, located about 14 km from Karwar, on Sunday afternoon.

Six tourists, including four women who ventured into water, were washed away in flash floods caused by rain. Two bodies were recovered soon after the incident. Search is on for another missing person.

Karwar rural police said that the rescue teams fished out three bodies, namely, Marcelina Estebio (38), Siddu Chair (21) and Sameer Gavade (23) on Monday morning. While two bodies were in the stream near Chendia village and the body of Siddu was found inside INS Kadamba Naval Base. The Nagarmadi water flows through the naval base.

The recovered bodies were sent to their native Madgaon after postmortem.

On Monday, search operation was taken up involving expert divers and lifeguards. Members of Karavali Boating Adventure team headed by Prakash Harikantra, social worker Madhav Naik, villagers of Chendia and three kayaks were also part of the operation.

MLA of Curtorim constituency in Goa Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco visited the Karwar civil hospital on Monday and made arrangements to shift the bodies to there respective places.

Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul said that the district administration has taken up rescue works and various department officials are involved in it. “We will examine how suddenly water has gushed into the stream, whether it was a cloudburst or some pond breached in the upstream,” he said.

The administration has clarified that no compensation will be given to the victims. “Even though, I will write to the government to give compensation on humanitarian grounds,” Nakul added.
