Karwar: Representatives of Shirwad gram panchayat and villagers submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner K Harishkumar in Karwar recently urging the authorities to immediately shift the solid waste disposal unit set up at Konmakki industrial zone coming under their gram panchayat limits in Karwar taluk.

The villagers said that they were against the waste disposal unit right from the beginning. However, the authorities went ahead with the project. Now, the waste water being released from the unit was flowing towards the village and was causing problems to the people. Due to the rainy season and waste disposal, the threat of epidemics was looming large in the village. So, the unit must be shifted elsewhere.

They said that they had also passed a resolution in this regard at the gram sabha and warned that they would stage a protest in case their demand is not fulfilled.
