Karwar: The progress review meeting held at Zilla Panchayat meeting hall, in Karwar, on Tuesday, to discuss the progress of the drinking water projects in the district ended in chaos.

The officials had to face the wrath of ZP members for failing to provide complete details on the works taken up under the National Rural Drinking Water Projects (NRDWP), the status of the ongoing projects and details on completed projects. ZP member Albert D’Souza and Pushpa Naik came down heavily on the officials for showing negligence in completion of the project which were implemented in 2013-14. They also said, some of the action plans have been approved without bringing it to the notice of the members.

The Rural Water Supply Wing Officials failed to give proper information on the queries raised by the members and sought time to go through the details.

Irked with this response of the officials, the members lashed at them and questioned why they come to the meeting, if they do not have replies?

Standing Committee Chairman L T Patil too charged at the officials on their style of working and said not to beat round the bush, but give replies to the point.

He said, once the works are completed, the officials have to inform the local ZP members and get his consent letter. Bills of the contractor will be passed only after producing the consent letter, he added.

Member Pushpa said, a project has been completed utilising Rs 50 lakh, but not even a single drop of water is available to the villagers. The officials should be held responsible for this, she added.

Without inspecting the construction site, the officials are making the estimation and hence, the works are taken up unscientifically, she noted.
