Udupi: An alleged affair between a boy and girl belonging to different communities led to a clash between the boy and the relatives of the girl on the premises of St Mary Church at Shirva in Udupi on Wednesday evening.
The incident took place when Chetan (21), a resident of Katapady had attended the annual festival of the Church along with his Muslim girlfriend from his village and a few other boys.
It is learnt that the girl’s kin had warned the boy against meeting her. However, on Wednesday he was allegedly flirting with the girl on the Church premises while some of his male friends also were present.
Two persons, said to be relatives of the girl, allegedly assaulted Chetan for taking the girl to the church. Chetan, who was surrounded by his friends, hit them back and this led to a clash. A few friends of the girl’s family also thrashed the boy. Later, Chetan’s friends took him to the district government hospital at Ajjarkad for treatment.
A case has been registered at Shirva police station and investigations are on.
