Water rationing schedule revised again

Mangaluru: Revising the drinking water rationing schedule, for the third time in the last fortnight, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) began supplying water for four consecutive days instead of three, from Saturday onwards.

Speaking to presspersons at the Thumbe vented dam, Mayor Kavita Sanil has said that after supplying water continuously till Tuesday there would be a two-day break.

The same schedule will be repeated till this month-end.

The corporation began water rationing from March 20 by supplying water once every 36 hours. Later, the supply duration was increased to 72 hours with an interval of 24 hours from March 27.

Ms. Sanil said the schedule had been revised as there was rain in the catchment areas on April 6 and 7.

The storage in the vented dam at Thumbe was 4.64 metres. At AMR Power Pvt. Ltd’s dam at Shambhoor it was 5.20m on Saturday.

The present storage in the Thumbe vented dam was enough for 25 days with the rationing in place, the Mayor said.

Ms. Sanil said that if there was good inflow in the Netravathi to the two dams, water will be supplied daily to the city from May 1.

The Mayor said that the civic body resorted to water rationing as a precaution to save water in the dams till May-end.

During the last summer, the corporation sent nearly Rs. 1 crore for water supply works including supply through tankers, cleaning of open wells and drilling borewells.
