Mangaluru: A 25-year-old student of the Warangal NIT in Telangana drowned at the NITK beach on Monday.

The student was identified as Nirmala Dangawal of Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.

Surathkal police sources said that Nirmala had come with 22 other students to participate in the inter-NIT sports meet being organised on the NITK campus. The students, after participating in the competitions, decided to visit the beach. Odela Raju, physical director of the Warangal NIT, accompanied the group of 23 girls to the beach.

Three students, Nirmala, Meghana and Khanoj, struggled when the sea turned rough. Nirmala was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while the other two girls are recovering in the hospital, police sources added.
