Uttara Kannada administration on alert as heavy rainfall forecast from June 6

Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has completed extensive monsoon preparedness measures following forecasts of moderate rainfall on June 4–5 and heavy rainfall between June 6 and 10. The India Meteorological Department and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre have issued weather alerts for the district.

In view of the forecast, authorities have identified 294 relief centres across the district and appointed nodal officers for each centre. The administration has also taken precautionary measures in landslide-prone areas to ensure timely response during emergencies.

According to officials, the Geological Survey of India has identified 439 locations vulnerable to landslides in the district. Spotters are being deployed and trained at these locations to continuously monitor conditions and alert authorities in case of any danger.

As part of monsoon preparedness, drain desilting and cleaning works have been undertaken by local bodies. The district administration has also directed concerned departments to conduct safety inspections of government schools, anganwadi centres, primary health centres, hostels, and other public buildings.

Officials said that BSNL and HESCOM have stocked essential materials required during the rainy season and are prepared with backup resources to address any disruptions in communication and power supply.

The District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) is functioning round the clock, while control rooms have been activated in all taluks to ensure swift response to emergencies. Residents have been advised to follow weather advisories issued by the district administration and contact the district or taluk disaster management control rooms in case of emergencies.
