Triple talaq: EC should take action against BJP, says Muslim Women Personal Law Board

LUCKNOW: Stating that the BJP was using the triple talaq issue for its "political interests", All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board on Tuesday said the Election Commission should take action against the saffron party.

"BJP has included the triple talaq issue in its manifesto though it is under consideration of the Supreme Court and on February 5, senior minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asked the opposition parties to clarify their views on it," AIMWPLB president Shaista Amber said.

"They are themselves a party in the case in the apex court which will take up the matter on February 14 ... using this issue as a political tool is wrong and EC needs to issue notice to BJP and Ravi Shankar Prasad for it," she said.

Senior BJP leader Prasad had on February 5 said that the Centre is committed to ending the "evil social practice" of triple talaq and had asked the Samajwadi Party, Congress and BSP to make their stand clear on the contentious issue.

He had said the Centre might take appropriate steps to ban triple talaq after the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls as the tradition "denies" respect to women.

The state goes to polls in seven phases starting February 11.
