Banned notes worth Rs 1.30 cr seized on Majali checkpost in Karwar

Karwar: Banned currency notes of Rs. 1000 and 500, worth rupees more than one crores were seized at the border of Goa - Karwar on Saturday, 22nd April, which was later seized by the Chittakula police.

According to sources, the Chittakula police were on a two-day joint coastal security exercise called ‘Sagar Kavach’, checking vehicles coming from Goa to Karnataka and happened to stop a government bus at Majali checkpost, and checked the bus where they found three big bags.

After checking the bags, the police found that it was full of banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations, a police officer said. Old currencies worth Rs 1,30,40,000 were found in the bags which were carried by three women.

The arrested women were identified as Bhavani Ramesh Naik, Jayashree Gouli and Meenakshi Naik who were bringing the currencies from Goa and they were travelling to Mundgod.

Police sources said that the arrested women are residents of Mundagod and Yellapur and had travelled to Madgaon in Goa for the transportation of the cash. The accused alleged that the cash belongs to Dr Vani Prabhu who is working in Madgaon.

Uttara Kannada SP Vasanth Rao Patil rushed to the Chittakula police station soon after the arrest and collected the details about the huge amount of old currencies, while police investigation is under process.
