Udupi: Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said measures had been taken to check the spread of Covid-19 at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT).
After visiting the MIT containment zone on Tuesday, he told media persons that there were nearly 8,000 students on the campus and 3,000 staffers. More than 900 students had tested positive for Covid-19 on the campus. The campus had been declared as a containment zone and tests had been conducted. The positivity rate is also high, he added.
"The only satisfaction is that no cases of severe infection have been reported so far. The situation demands stringent measures with 14-day isolation of all those who had tested positive. The examinations have been almost completed and the students, who had tested negative, will be sent back home. The government is constantly in touch with the district administration and the institute," he said.
The minister said that he had insisted on taking measures to prevent Covid-19 from spreading in KMC Medical College and Hospital. The main reason for spreading was the high concentration of people and negligence on part of the students in following covid protocols. RT-PCR report would be mandatory for all, he noted.
