Shivamogga: The police on Wednesday raided a place on the bank of Varada river in Anaji village, Sorab taluk, where sand was being extracted illegally. They seized more than 10 tonnes of sand.

On seeing the police vehicle approaching the place, the workers who were loading sand onto four tractors parked there fled. The police seized the tractors.

According to police sources, Suresh and Ramesh, two residents of the village, are behind the illegal sand extraction business. Cases under Section 420 (cheating) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1975 have been booked against them at the Anavatti police station.
