Karwar: Around 584 litres of liquor seized

Karwar: A large amount of liquor was seized in Karwar on 21st March Tuesday, along with some teak-wood logs.

Teak-wood logs:

Teak-wood logs worth around Rs.1o lakh were seized by Yellapur forest officials, from a sawmill at Udyamanagar in Yellapur town on Tuesday evening.

According to the sources, the forest officials headed by the ACF conducted a raid on Arogyamata Wood Industry, acting on a tip-off. Around 20 big teak-wood logs were stored illegally in the industry, which were seized by the officials.

The owner of the sawmill escaped and the search is on for him. A similar raid was conducted on the same industry few years ago, and wood worth lakhs of rupees, which was being stored illegally, was seized.

584 litres of liquor:

Around 584 litres of liquor worth Rs.1.17 lakh was seized by Excise Department officials of Karwar along with a car worth Rs 7 lakh at Majali near Karwar city on 21st March Tuesday.

According to sources, the Excise Department officials led by Excise inspector Suvarna Naik, visited an engineering college near Majali and found a car loaded with Goa liquor meant for transporting illegally to Karnataka. Suvarna Naik said that they visited the spot following a tip-off.

It is said that while the security on highways has been beefed up, liquor has been transporting through forest and sea routes between Karwar and Goa.

Liquor seized from train:

Liquor worth Rs.13,000 was seized by the RPF(Railway Protection Force), from Madgaon-Mangalore DEMU train at Karwar railway station, on Tuesday.

According to sources, the RPF police had conducted the special train checking drive, acting on a tip-off and found 266 unclaimed bottles of liquor of various brands weighing 54 litres in the general compartment of the train.

The liquor was seized and its value was estimated to be up to Rs.13,000.
