Karwar: As many as 20 houses were damaged, crops in hundreds of acres of land were inundated, and electric poles and trees collapsed in Uttara Kannada district due to continuous rains.
Rainwater gushed into houses in low-lying areas in various parts of the district. One house each in Honnavar, Ankola, and Sirsi was completely damaged, while 17 houses in Haliyal, Mundagod, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Kumta, Ankola, Dandeli, and Siddapur taluks were partially damaged.
The damages were reported following the collapse of walls and the falling of trees on houses. A woman was injured after a mud wall collapsed on her at her house in Shirali in Bhatkal taluk.
Following the information from the State Natural Disaster Management Authority that the district may receive heavy rainfall on July 7, a red alert has been issued. Hence, the deputy commissioner announced a holiday for schools and colleges in the district on Thursday too.
In the backdrop of heavy rains, the schools and colleges were closed for the last three days.
The deputy commissioner has directed the school and college management boards to make required arrangements for conducting the classes in the coming days.
