Rain inundates low-lying areas, floods houses in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: As heavy rain continued to batter the Dakshina Kannada district, low-lying areas and roads remained inundated with water on Tuesday. 

Following incessant rain overnight, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra Kumar K V had declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday, keeping the safety of students in mind.

He had also advised parents to ensure that children do not go near water bodies.

Fishermen also received an advisory not to venture into the sea.

Due to a flash flood, rainwater entered an anganwadi centre and DK Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School at Ucchilagudde in Someshwara.

The fire and emergency service personnel rushed to the spot and shifted materials from the centre to a safer location.

The driver of a car, struck in a flooded drain, at Ucchila Someshwara, had a miraculous escape.

The driver who remained locked inside the car was rescued by fire service personnel.

Three people suffered injuries after a retaining wall collapsed at Onikere near Morgans’ Gate. MCC Mayor Premananda Shetty visited the spot.

A house was damaged after the compound of a house collapsed in Bikarnakatte.

Articles inside the house were damaged after a retaining wall collapsed at Bajjodi in Kulashekar.

A landslide occurred at Saradka on the border of Kerala in Bantwal taluk and a bike rider had a miraculous escape, but the bike was damaged.

Many houses in Talapady, Devipura, Kotekar, Vaidyanatha Nagara, Ombathukere and surrounding areas in Ullal were inundated with water.

The smooth movement of vehicles was disrupted after a tree fell on the road at Madur.

A road in Devipura remained flooded and a hillock caved at Halekote in Ullal. Inmates in a house were shifted after a coconut tree crashed on the house.

Over 20 houses in Kallapu in Permannur village were inundated with rainwater.

The flooded Kolnadu-Kudthamugeru Road on the Vittal-Salethur stretch choked the movement of vehicles. Alert villagers were seen standing guard on either side of the road to warn commuters and pedestrians not to cross the road.

The collapse of a retaining wall saw anxious moments at Indira Nagara in Haleyangadi GP. On hearing a loud sound, Suresh Devadiga woke up and saw cracks in the wall of the house.

SDPI volunteers rushed to the spot and cleared mud from the house.

MLA U T Khader visited flooded-affected Kallapu Patla, Kallapu, Vishnumoorthi Temple and Kotekar Nellistala Temple areas.

The MLA, quoting residents, said that the region was experiencing flood after work on the national highway was completed.

“I have directed the Ullal CMC to discuss the issue with highway authorities to desilt stormwater drains,” added Khader.

In the past 24 hours, the district received an average rainfall of 64.1 mm.

Four houses had been fully damaged and 14 houses had been partially damaged in the district. A total of 46 electricity poles and three transformers had been damaged. 

Due to landslip, the movement of traffic was restricted on the Gurupura stretch on the city’s outskirts.

With the catchment areas receiving good rainfall, the level of River Nethravathi was 7.2 metres in Bantwal. 

Flights diverted

Two flights arriving from Dubai and Damman to Mangaluru were diverted to Bengaluru.

Holiday for schools, colleges

With the IMD declaring an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada, Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra K V has declared a holiday for schools, colleges, anganwadis and ITI institutions in the district on Wednesday.
