Bhatkal: The downpour of rain started just a week ago and the problem have already started for the village of Jalikodi.
The downpour since a week has flooded the houses with rain water due to the blockage of flowing water into the sea. A river flows through the village and converges at the sea so that the overflow would go straight into the sea without causing flooding in the villages, but the accumulation of silt at the river has restricted the rain water to channelise into the sea.
The Pattan panchayat has tried desilting with the help of JCB but permanent solution is yet to be found.
It was suggested that a concrete wall should be constructed on both sides of sewers to prevent water logging and facilitate the easy flow of rain water to the sea but the pattan panchayat lacks sufficient funds for the construction of the wall.
The village, which has more than 150 houses, suffer through these misery every year. They pointed out that many higher officials have paid them a visit in the past and promised to resolve the problem. But, nothing has happened so far.
Bhatkal taluk recorded a 46.4 mm of rainfall from Sunday morning to Monday morning. It was observed that less rain pours during the day but heavy rain makes it presence during night.
Bhatkal taluk faces the same situation. The dirt accumulated in the skewers has led to water logging and the dirty rain water has crept onto the roads. The Municipality has started the cleaning of roadside sewers before the monsoons but the results are not satisfactory.
