Mangaluru: Kankanady Town Police shot a notorious rowdy-sheeter Ummar Farooq in the leg on Tuesday night. The incident occurred at Pacchanady on the city’s outskirts.

According to Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sandip Patil, acting on a tip-off, police went to arrest Farooq. But Farooq refused to surrender and fired at the police. Constable Sandeep was wounded by the rowdy’s gunshot. Police retaliated in self-defence and opened fire at Farooq. They arrested him later.

Extortion

Farooq was involved in extortion. He had taken money from M A Hasan Bava and a case was registered in Mangaluru East Police Station in this regard. 

Farooq was also hatching a conspiracy to kill Sameer, an accused in the murder of Ilyas, a notorious criminal and a leader of a Target Group.

Incidentally, Ilyas is Farooq’s brother-in-law. He, Sumra Imran and others were hatching Sameer’s murder plot, the commissioner added.

As many as nine cases are registered against Farooq. For a few months, Farooq was trying to re-group the Target Group-- an extortion team--after the murder of Ilyas in 2018.
