Bhatkal: Police in Uttara Kannada district have stepped up action against parents and vehicle owners who allow minors to drive vehicles on public roads. A total of 131 cases were registered across the district between January and September 2026, including 45 cases in Bhatkal.
According to police, the cases were registered under Section 199(A) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Following hearings in the cases, courts have imposed a total fine of Rs 13.09 lakh on the parents of the minors concerned and vehicle owners. Bhatkal accounted for the highest share, with fines totalling Rs 5,38,500 in the 45 cases.
The police said allowing minors to drive not only increases the risk of accidents but also poses a threat to the safety of other road users. Legal action is therefore being taken against parents and vehicle owners who provide vehicles to minors.
Police have warned parents against allowing children to drive even for learning purposes or to run small errands. Providing a vehicle to a minor can lead to a police case, court proceedings and a fine.
The police have appealed to parents and vehicle owners not to hand over vehicles to minors and to take responsibility for road safety and the children's future.
