Mangaluru: According to the sources, a raid was conducted by the officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Regional Unit, Mangalore on 19th April, Wednesday at the Mangalore International Airport.
The raid was executed on basis of credible intelligence received stating that an international passenger would attempt to smuggle gold biscuits into the country.
The passenger Chattanchal Abdul Razak (49 yrs) hailing from Kasargod, Kerala, was intercepted by the team shortly after arrival from Dubai by Spice Jet flight SG 60 at around 18:30 hours.
After interrogation and examination, it was revealed that the passenger had secreted about 4 gold bars inside his rectum which were then safely removed after taking medical advice by medical professionals.
The bars of 24 karat purity, found inside his rectum were worth Rs.10 lakh and weighed around 350 grams. The gold was later seized by the DRI officers under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
It was found that the accused was a regular in smuggling gold and he stated that the Customs Check at airports will concentrate mainly on baggage screening and frisking, but concealment’s like this will largely go undetected.
Further investigations are in progress.
