Oman flash floods on Eid: Two Kerala natives dead, woman missing; search operations underway

Thiruvananthapuram: Two Indian nationals from Kerala were killed and a woman remains missing after a vehicle was swept away in a flash flood in Oman on Eid ul-Fitr, according to Malayalam media reports.

The incident occurred in a wadi in Al Batinah Governorate following heavy rains that triggered a sudden surge in water flow, a common hazard in the region during inclement weather.

The deceased have been identified as Yusuf and Shamla, natives of Thrithala in Kerala’s Palakkad district, while the missing woman has been identified as Ramla, also from the same locality. The victims were reportedly on an Eid outing when their vehicle was caught in the strong current and swept away.

Omani civil defence and police launched search and rescue operations immediately after the incident. Efforts are ongoing, though challenging due to strong currents and difficult terrain, with authorities deploying advanced equipment, including drones, to trace the missing woman.

According to Manorama News, the incident has triggered concern in Kerala, particularly in Thrithala, where the victims’ families are awaiting further updates. Reports suggest the deceased were expatriates working in Oman.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V. D. Satheesan, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking urgent intervention to coordinate with Omani authorities, expedite rescue efforts and ensure assistance to the affected families.
