No price regulation for water tankers in Uttara Kannada

Karwar: Uttara Kannada district is facing acute shortage of water in all its 11 taluks. In most of the towns and villages, people are depending on tanker water.

The district administration has made arrangements to supply water through tankers in villages and towns, where groundwater level has depleted completely. Tankers are the only source of drinking water here. Otherwise people will have to bring water in pots and bottles from faraway palces. Each house is supplied with 5-10 pots of water through tankers by the administration. In Bhatkal, 1,000 litres of tanker water costs `600, which is `350-`400 in Kumta, Ankola and Karwar and `300-`400 in Siddapur.

If any resident requires more water, they will have to purchase tanker water from suppliers who are available in towns and some main villages. Each tanker of 1,000 litre costs `350- `600 in the district. However, there is no report of presence of tanker mafia in the district. If people pay for water, they will get as much as water they need.
