Bhatkal: The old fish market of Bhatkal will now be shut after March 31, and no one will be allowed to sell fish here. In this regard, the Town Municipality has put up a poster in the fish market in which fish sellers have been asked to vacate their goods from the market by March 31, as the old market will get shut after that.

Talking to SahilOnline, Municipal President Mr. Parvez Qasimji said that from April 1, fishes can be sold in the new hygienic fish market located on Government Hospital road, and the old market will be closed. Legal action has been taken in this regard and necessary information has been provided to government officials, including police officials, regarding shifting of the fish market.

Parvez Qasimji said that besides putting up posters in the old market, spy cameras have also been installed at some spots. If anyone tries to misbehave with the decision, criminal cases will be filed against them.

It may be recalled that the new hygienic fish market was inaugurated in 2018 by the then District In-Charge Minister RV Deshpande, in which Bhatkal MLA Sunil Naik was also present at the inauguration ceremony. But despite the inauguration, the old fish market was not shifted to the new fish market, and fishermen had earlier staged protests to restore the old market.  But now after Parvez Qasimji has taken the charge of TMC President, he has taken a strong step by announcing the start of a new fish market from April 1 and has issued a notice to close the old market after March 31.
