Mumbai: Four of a family die after reportedly consuming watermelon; probe underway

Mumbai: In a shocking incident reported from South Mumbai, four members of a family lost their lives after they allegedly fell critically ill following the consumption of watermelon at their residence in the Pydhonie area.

The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), residents of a residential building in the congested Pydhonie locality.

According to initial information, soon after consuming the fruit, the family reportedly began experiencing severe symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, and acute discomfort. Their condition is said to have deteriorated rapidly, leading to panic among family members and neighbours.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but despite efforts by doctors, all four were declared dead. The sudden deaths under such circumstances have raised serious concerns and prompted an immediate investigation.

Police have registered a case and begun a detailed probe to determine the exact cause of the incident. While preliminary suspicion points towards possible food contamination or poisoning, officials have not confirmed any specific reason so far.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and samples of the consumed food items, including the watermelon, are likely to be examined as part of the forensic analysis. Authorities stated that a clear picture will emerge only after the medical and laboratory reports are received.

The incident has created anxiety in the locality, with residents expressing concern over food safety and the quality of perishable items being sold in the market.

Officials have appealed to the public to remain cautious and not to speculate, emphasizing that the investigation is still underway and conclusions will be drawn only after thorough examination.
