Mother, son drown in quarry pit at Udupi

Udupi: In a tragic incident a mother and her son drowned in a stone quarry pond while washing clothes in Durga nagar in Alevoor village on Tuesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Diyamavva alias Nilawwa (22) and her son Hanumantappa (6). They were the natives of Hungund Taluka of Bagalkot district, but residing in Udupi from last 20 years.

According to sources, Nilawwa was washing clothes while her son was playing near the pond. Accidentally her son fell in the pond, Nilawwa jumped in to rescue her son, but both drowned.

Fire service personnel rushed to the spot tried to retrieve the bodies but failed in their attempt. Finally expert swimmers from Bendoorkatte jumped into the pond and pulled out the bodies.

It is said that Nilawwa, her husband Yamunappa and son all went to thier village Hungund to celebrate a festival and returned to Udupi only yesterday, to go through this tragic incident today.
