Karwar: The annual fishing ban on mechanized boats will be enforced along the Karnataka coast from June 1 to July 31 for a total of 61 days, as part of conservation efforts and to facilitate the breeding season of marine life.
During this period, mechanized boats will not be allowed to operate in the coastal waters of Uttara Kannada district. However, traditional fishing using country boats and motorized boats with engines of up to 10 horsepower will be permitted, provided fishers strictly follow the guidelines issued by the Fisheries Department and district administration.
Any violation of these rules will attract penalties under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act. Offenders may also face disqualification from accessing subsidized diesel for up to one year.
The Joint Director of Fisheries has appealed to all fishermen to cooperate and comply with the ban, underscoring that the regulation is in place to protect the long-term interests of the fishing community and the marine ecosystem.
