Mangaluru: According to the sources, petty shops on the footpaths were demolished by the officials of Mangaluru City Corporation in Nellikai road, Hampanakatta and Central Market under the protection of police on 19th April, Wednesday.
Protests were seen at the Central Market held by some vendors on evacuation while it was alleged by shop owners at Hampanakatta that the MCC undertook demolition without prior notice
Revenue officer Praveen Chandra Karkera, while addressing the press, said that though the prior notice was not issued, the people had been informed of the evacuation through a press release before two days.
"Many complaints had been registered regarding these shops and vendors by the pedestrians and hence, the main reason for this raid/evacuation was to have clean footpaths and provide free walkway for the pedestrians”, he further added.
Police station Inspector Belliyappa, Assistant Town Planning officer Shivaraj, Dinesh, Raju and Ravindra from Pandeshwar, Sub Inspector of Bunder Station Madan, and other police staff were also present at the evacuation.
