Mangaluru: The DK Zilla police SP Bhushan Gulab Rao has expressed alarm over the increasing accidents in the district.
Speaking at the Road safety meeting held at DC hall, he said that in the year 2016, a total of 530 road accidents were recorded in the past 6 months, in which 104 people has lost their lives and 759 were injured.
The lack of precautionary boards on the National highways and not following the preventive measures have emerged out as the main reason for the accidents. He requested the Zilla Panchayat to conduct road safety awareness campaign to curb the rate of accidents.
He also instructed the departments concerned, particularly, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) should join hands with the police to install various traffic safety measures.
The district police have identified 313 spots where various safety measures are wanting, including signboards, barricades and cat eyes, for the safety of motorists as well as pedestrians.
He presented the yearly records of accident from the past 5 years. The number of accident has risen from 750 in 2011 to 959 in 2015 where 118 lives were lost and 196 were injured in 2011. In 2012, there were 828 accidents where 117 death occurred and 1338 injuries. In 2013, 891 accidents took place leaving 147 dead and 1318 injured. In 2014, 957 accidents have occured where 148 were dead and 1336 sustained injuries. In 2015, 959 accident caused 169 deaths and 1271 injuries.
