Kumta: A government bus skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Mastihalli area of Devimane Ghat in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district, killing a 40-year-old woman from Bhatkal and injuring more than 12 passengers. The accident occurred late Thursday night
The deceased woman has been identified as Parveen, a resident of Bhatkal. Further details about her residential locality in Bhatkal were not immediately available.
According to sources, the bus was travelling from Bagalkot to Dharmasthala via Sirsi and Bhatkal. The accident occurred near Mastihalli when the driver reportedly lost control of the bus while negotiating a narrow and dangerous bend. The bus broke through the roadside safety barrier before plunging into the deep gorge.
Following the accident, PSI Qadir and personnel from Kumta Police Station reached the spot. With the help of local residents, the injured passengers trapped in the gorge were rescued and shifted to the government hospital in Kumta for treatment.
A case has been registered at Kumta Police Station and further investigation is underway.
